Benkos Biohó is a mythical character, a Maroon warrior who escaped from slavery and founded Palenque de San Basilio, the first free city in America, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. In this film, various members of the Palenquera community revisit and relive Benkos Biohó's story in a personal and free way. Víctor Cimarra, a farmer from Palenquero, is Benkos with his army of cimarróns. Justo Valdés, a champeta singer, meets him on the walls of Cartagena. But Victor is also in the present and survives as best he can in the wild city of Cartagena. The camera films this process of collective creation, in which the characters create from Benkos, the center of their cosmogony. Cine-trance, collective creation to carry out a process of mystical thought and historical reinvention. Ethno-fiction, improvisation, experimental theater, docu-fiction, Visions of Benkos is a film that overflows, uncontrollable, mixing categories and breaking codes, where the author is erased to allow the foam and delirium of collective creation to rise and reach its apex.
